چکیده
Abstract Assessing individuals’ abundance, residency (presence at a site within certain period) and fidelity (tendency to return the same in subsequent seasons or years) is crucial for evaluating improving effectiveness of spatial conservation/management measures regarding ecologically socio-economically valuable species. Using underwater visual census (UVC) photo-identification (photo-ID) techniques, we estimated dusky grouper, Epinephelus marginatus , two protected sites Tavolara-Punta Coda Cavallo Marine Protected Area (Sardinia, Italy) summers 2017–2018. The scope spatio-temporal resolution study was extended by involving volunteer recreational divers photo collection. Grouper mean densities varied significantly across sampling dates, with significant variability between 2 years investigated sites. At least 94 grouper visited 2017–2018 based on analysis 968 high-quality photos using semi-automated software photo-identify individuals. Overall, most frequently sighted recorded 32 different days 21 individuals (22%) identified 2017 were re-sighted 2018. participation helped detect inter-site (3.5–4 km apart) movements female male, supporting previous findings occurrence reproduction-related movements. This provides novel insights into site-fidelity patterns its small-scale probably related reproduction. Specifically, provide indications that effective protection from fishing should encompass entire area used reproductive

Low Connectivity between Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas: A Biophysical Modeling Approach for the Dusky Grouper Epinephelus marginatus
Marine protected areas (MPAs) are major tools to protect biodiversity and sustain fisheries. For species with a sedentary adult phase and a dispersive larval phase, the effectiveness of MPA networks for population persistence depends on connectivity through larval dispersal. However, connectivity patterns between MPAs remain largely unknown at large spatial scales. Here, we used a biophysical m...
متن کاملHoming and site fidelity in the greasy grouper Epinephelus tauvina (Serranidae) within a marine protected area in coastal Kenya
Homing ability and site-fidelity in the greasy grouper Epinephelus tauvina (Serranidae) were studied at Malindi Marine Park (6.3 km2), coastal Kenya, from January to April 2002 using acoustic telemetry. Displacement experiments involving 12 groupers (mean size 57.9 cm) from multiple capture sites resulted in a 67% homing success. Upon release at displacement sites (0.5 to 2.6 km from the point ...
متن کاملAge and growth of the dusky grouper Epinephelus marginatus (Lowe 1834) in an exploited population of the western Mediterranean Sea
The age and growth of the dusky grouper, Epinephelus marginatus, in the Balearic Islands (western Mediterranean) were studied by otolith analysis from a sample of 358 specimens ranging in total length (LT) from 6 6 to 105 6 cm. The specimens came from commercial artisanal and recreational spear fisheries between 1999 and 2003. Otoliths grew asymmetrically throughout the range of LT studied, sho...
متن کاملEcology and ethnoecology of dusky grouper [garoupa, Epinephelus marginatus (Lowe, 1834)] along the coast of Brazil
Dusky grouper (garoupa, Epinephelus marginatus) is an important catch for several artisanal small-scale fisheries along the Brazilian coast. It is a sedentary, monandric, and late maturing protogynous species, which makes it vulnerable to overharvesting even though it is mainly caught through hook and line or spear fishing through free diving. Lack of information on the ecology and biology of t...
متن کاملLarval and juvenile development of dusky grouper Epinephelus marginatus reared in mesocosms.
The larval development of the dusky grouper Epinephelus marginatus up to the benthic juvenile stage is described in detail to establish a reference for their larval identification. Development is described in terms of ontogenetic changes in morphology, growth, pigmentation, fin structure and skeletal structure. Larvae were reared in mesocosms at a mean temperature of 24·3° C, salinity of 36·5, ...
